- Nutella - the original cocoa and hazelnut spread - is great addition to almost any meal. Spread it on toast or pancakes to liven up your breakfast routine. Great for dessert crepes or served with vanilla ice cream and strawberries. Nutella's origins can be traced back to the end of World War II, when cocoa was in short supply. Pastry maker Pietro Ferrero invented the spread when he created a paste of hazelnut, sugar and a bit of cocoa powder. It was originally made into the shape of a loaf that could be sliced and put onto a piece of bread. The concoction was called SuperCrema up until 1964 when the originators son tinkered with the recipe, and invented the world's most famous spread - Nutella.
